LCD TVs: great looks, go anywhere

So you're looking for a cool new flat-panel TV, but can't justify a 42" plasma in the bedroom. What's a cutting-edge TV enthusiast to do? Take a look at LCDs--they're thin, versatile and packed with features that rival those of many larger TVs.

So how does such a great picture come from a small package? Liquid crystal displays sandwich a layer of--gasp--liquid crystals between two layers of polarized glass, one of which contains a color filter and related voltage system. Unlike plasma, LCD cannot create its own light, so a backlight is also required. Once you turn the power on, the backlight is triggered and the LCD goes to work to deliver a dynamic digital picture.

LCD perks

It may sound like a lot, but all of this takes place within only a few inches of glass, so the display is as efficient as it is complex. Here are some of the key benefits that LCD TVs offer:

Slim design
As you know by now, LCD packs a big punch in a small package. These slender displays are fairly lightweight and easy to mount on the wall, which also means placement flexibility. So, if you're looking to add a sleek display to the bedroom, kitchen or other cozy space without overwhelming the room, LCD is the way to go.

With viewing angles of up to 170 degrees, LCDs are the only TVs that surpass plasma, which will make you--and your friend stuck sitting to the side of the TV--very happy.

PC compatibility
Many LCD TVs also feature a PC input, which means you can hook up your PC or laptop with ease. If your TV also has a picture-in-picture function, you don't have to miss your favorite shows to do it, either.

So what's not to like? LCD TVs deliver a great picture and offer amazing features, all from a slim, stylish display. Whether you're looking to make a statement or simply introduce a new TV into a small room, LCDs are definitely worth checking out.
